First came GDPR, then mandatory cookie bars, and now everyone is <strong>Google Consent Mode v2<\/strong>(consent mode), while providers like CookieYes or Cookiebot charge you monthly fees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is valid: <em>Is this just another distraction, or do I really need it? What happens if I just don&#039;t deal with it?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this article, we will put aside the legal and IT jargon and explain clearly what it is and who it is for. <strong>mandatory<\/strong> to move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The \u201eHouse Party\u201d Analogy: How to Understand the System<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To understand the technology, imagine your website as a <strong>as a house party<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cookies:<\/strong> These are the <strong>wristbands<\/strong>, that you do to guests (visitors).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Yes <em>wristband required<\/em>: without this they cannot enter the bathroom (the site does not work).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yes <em>marketing wristband<\/em>: this is how you stick a note on their back so you can later know what they drank and send them advertising.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Cookie Banner (e.g. CookieYes):<\/strong> He is the strict one. <strong>janitor<\/strong>. Stops the guest at the door: <em>\u201eHello! What kind of wristbands do you accept?\u201d<\/em> If the guest says no, the concierge will not allow them to put on the marketing wristband.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Google Consent Mode v2:<\/strong> He is the <strong>interpreter<\/strong> between the Porter and Google.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why was \u201ev2\u201d and the new interpreter needed?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the past, if a guest refused the wristband, Google was \u201eblind.\u201d It didn\u2019t see anything. The <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/google-ads\/answer\/10000067?hl=hu\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/google-ads\/answer\/10000067?hl=hu\">Google&#039;s official description<\/a> according to the <strong>Consent Mode v2<\/strong> (the interpreter) is now able to send signals to the advertising system even if the visitor has not accepted cookies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He tells Google: <em>\u201eLook, this guest came in, didn\u2019t ask for a marketing wristband (so DON\u2019T track who he is!), but know that he was here and made a purchase.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the key: <strong>You will not be given any personal data, but your statistics will not be affected.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens if you DO NOT turn on Consent Mode v2?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many people ask: <em>\u201eWill this disrupt my site?\u201d<\/em> Your website will technically work. Buttons will be clickable, images will load. The <strong>trouble in your wallet<\/strong> and it can arise in your marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the 3 scenarios:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Case 1: You are running Google Ads or Facebook ads (Danger Zone!)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you pay for advertising but don&#039;t have Consent Mode v2 set up, from March <strong>Your ad account has gone blind.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Google doesn&#039;t get feedback on who made the purchase.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can&#039;t &quot;remarket&quot; (re-reach people who put something in their cart but didn&#039;t buy it).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Result:<\/strong> Your advertising costs are skyrocketing, your revenue is decreasing because the system cannot optimize.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Case 2: You only look at traffic (Google Analytics)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you don&#039;t advertise, you just like to look at statistics, then you will &quot;only&quot; lose data. Those who reject cookies will be invisible to you. Consent Mode v2 would help you have an estimated, anonymous statistic about them too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Case 3: Hobby site \/ No ads \/ Not interested in statistics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you don&#039;t spend money on marketing, the lack of Consent Mode v2 won&#039;t cause you any technical problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do I have to pay \u201eCookieYes\u201d and its partners?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of my clients receive bills from various cookie management software and don&#039;t understand why they should pay for a pop-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The short answer:<\/strong> There is no obligation to pay, but technical compliance comes at a price \u2013 either in money or expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Free versions:<\/strong> Most providers have limited free plans (e.g. up to 25,000 visitors per month, or a limited number of subpages). This may be enough for smaller sites!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Paid versions:<\/strong> For higher traffic or more complex sites, they are inevitable for convenience and legal security.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Alternatives:<\/strong> There are also one-time paid or free WordPress plugins, but these <strong>must be set by a professional<\/strong>, to actually communicate with Google&#039;s system (be an &quot;interpreter&quot;). Just putting an &quot;I accept&quot; button is not enough for Google Ads these days, and <a href=\"https:\/\/naih.hu\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/naih.hu\/\">NAIH (Data Protection Authority)<\/a> I&#039;m not sure it&#039;s appropriate either.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summary: What should you do now?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#039;t panic, but don&#039;t bury your head in the sand if you have a business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>If you advertise (Google Ads):<\/strong> Have your settings checked by your developer immediately!
